Red tuna, açaí bowl and the lanes in the evening
In Tarifa the fish comes from the Atlantic and the tuna from the Almadraba, the nets that have stood off this coast for centuries. The evening begins on Calle Batalla del Salado and wanders into the old town. From our apartment it is ten to fifteen minutes on foot, and back again.

01 · Coastal table
Food carries the Atlantic into town
Tarifa lies on the Strait, and you can taste it: fish and seafood from the Atlantic, plus Andalusian cooking and a young, international scene.
Atún rojo is on almost every menu. If you want to know where the fish comes from, just ask.
02 · Almadraba
The Almadraba: nets that have stood for centuries
The Almadraba is a labyrinth of fixed nets off the coast of Cádiz into which the tuna swims on its migration into the Mediterranean. Tarifa belongs to this coast, which is why red tuna here is more than a dish.
It is fresh in spring, when the nets are up; the rest of the year it comes tinned or frozen, and good kitchens tell you which it is.
The evening usually begins on Calle Batalla del Salado, where the first restaurants and bars are, and wanders from there through the Puerta de Jerez into the old town.
On a warm night the lanes are full long after dark, and it may well be that a kitesurfing world champion is sitting at the bar next to you.
If you prefer it quieter, take a table in a side lane and be home by eleven. If not, stay.

04 · A day that flows
Our day: breakfast, wind, dinner
Our day begins with breakfast: an açaí bowl at Café SURLA or Powerhouse, or Helenas Kitchen right next to our front door in La Marina.
Then the wind decides. If it comes, we go out on the water and eat late; if it stays away, the day is for Bolonia or a long lunch on the beach.
In the evening we walk into town and see where there is room.
