Bolonia: beach, dune and a Roman town on the sand
Bolonia is a bay west of Tarifa: a wide Atlantic beach, a sand dune declared a natural monument, and right behind it Baelo Claudia, a Roman town with forum, theatre and fish factories. That is a whole day, and you drive there.

01 · A coherent day
Everything on one bay
Beach, dune and ruins share the same bay in Bolonia. You park once, walk through the Roman town in the morning, to the beach at midday and onto the dune in the afternoon.
We give Bolonia the whole day. After the beach we drive back to Tarifa for dinner.

The beach and the dune
The beach is wide and open, framed by hills, with the Atlantic in front. At the western end the dune rises, a shifting dune that the wind pushes a little further inland every year.
The dune is protected; you go up by the signposted path, and from the top the bay lies at your feet.
Baelo Claudia lived from trade with North Africa and from fish. Forum, basilica, theatre and the streets are so clearly recognisable that you understand the town plan without a guide.

Garum: the fish sauce Rome wanted
Right on the beach are the salting works where tuna and mackerel became garum, the fish sauce traded throughout the Roman Empire.
The tuna passed by here even then. The Almadraba nets that stand off the coast today catch it on the same route.
05 · Practical rhythm
The day
From La Marina you drive just under half an hour west along the N-340; the turn-off to Bolonia is signposted.
In summer the morning is worth it, before it gets crowded. The opening hours of the ruins change with the season — check them on the day.

Bolonia is a day by car. From the underground garage at Family & Surf you are there in just under half an hour, and in the evening back on foot in the old town.
