What guests can expect from us
A good stay runs in the background.
The shower is hot, the wifi fast, the bed wide, and what you look for is where you expect it. What interests us are the things that count after the photos: how well you sleep, whether the terrace has shade in the morning and whether you find the way to the bakery without us.
Clean, always. Steps, access and anything that is missing are in the description before you book. Replies usually come within an hour, from Robert himself.
AMARA means love
Guests ask us about the name more often than about anything else. Frigiliana was shaped by three cultures — Christian, Jewish and Muslim — and the Muslims here spoke Andalusi Arabic. So the name lives in both languages: Spanish gives amar, to love, and the Andalusi Arabic root means to inhabit a place and make it flourish.
Love sits at the centre of that on purpose. People do their best work on what they love. We choose places we want to spend time in ourselves and furnish them as we would live. Robert takes personal responsibility for the AMARA standard; established local partners prepare the stays and look after them on site.
In the end that is what reaches you — not as a line on a feature list, but as a stay where the small things are right. It is also why AMARA is made for two: a honeymoon, a wedding anniversary, the days around a wedding in Frigiliana, or simply time together worth taking off work for.
Who is behind AMARA

Frigiliana was only meant to be a stop along the way. I was driving to Tarifa with my girlfriend at the time and wanted to see the famous white villages en route. I got out in Frigiliana and never quite drove on again — it was the quiet. As it happened, a house in the old town was for sale that very week, and I bought it during that same stay. That was 2020, in the middle of the pandemic: not an obvious moment for courage, but a good one for decisions. What I had was a restoration project.
While the building work was going on, we kept coming back to the area and used to stay in Nerja. That apartment turned out to be for sale too, so it became the second — and because Frigiliana was still a building site, it was the one that welcomed the first guests, in May 2021. I became a Superhost that same year. Nerja, to me, is the uncomplicated, honest Spain: sitting down in a tapas bar in the evening, ordering a beer and getting the small tapa with it, free.
Tarifa is still the most beautiful place on this planet as far as I am concerned, and kitesurfing there is what I burn for. My friendship with Mark, who founded Tarifa Surf Club, dates from that time — which is why kite lessons and equipment are so straightforward to arrange for our guests in Tarifa.
What is in the houses comes from our own travelling, for work and privately. That set the standard high from the start: we take every piece of guest feedback seriously, but there has rarely been anything fundamental to change.
I do not live on site permanently. I travel between Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Andalusia, am in the stays regularly, and work alongside this as a freelance management consultant. Frigiliana is where I come to rest. Tarifa is where I get in the water.

The same people since 2021
Cleaning, maintenance, laundry and guest support are handled by established local partners — the same ones since the first guest. People who have known the houses for years notice things before a guest has to report them.
Self check-in, still a direct line
We introduced self check-in in 2020 and kept it because it works: you arrive when you arrive, with no handover appointment. If you book directly with AMARA, you are still writing to me before and during the stay.

If something is not right, it is not passed around. The person who can resolve it takes it on as quickly as possible.

AMARA is made for two: a honeymoon, an anniversary, a few days off.
The exception is Tarifa, where two adults with small children also fit.
