Through the Puerta de Jerez into the old town
Tarifa’s old town lies behind a town wall. You enter through the Puerta de Jerez, the 10th-century Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno stands by the port, and in the lanes between you sit in a café in the afternoon and over tapas in the evening. From our apartment it is ten to fifteen minutes on foot.

01 · Strait town
A town built to guard the Strait
Whoever controlled the Strait controlled the way between two seas and two continents. That is why Tarifa has walls, a Castillo and gates, and why the old town looks out over the water.
You notice it as you walk: the lanes climb, the wall keeps reappearing, and at the end you are standing at the port.
02 · Puerta de Jerez
Enter through the surviving gate
The Puerta de Jerez belonged to the last ring of walls and is still the gate into the old town. Outside the modern town, inside narrow lanes and white houses.
Behind it begins the part of Tarifa that is loveliest on foot: small squares, cafés and again and again a glimpse of the wall.
The Castillo dates from the 10th century, the time of the caliphs, and was extended over the centuries. It stands by the port, looking out over the Strait.
An hour is enough for walls and view; the rest of the afternoon belongs to the lanes.

04 · Lived Old Town
Café in the afternoon, tapas in the evening
The old town is lived in: cafés, small shops, squares with children and dogs. In the afternoon you sit in the shade of a lane; in the evening the tables fill.
The evening begins outside on Calle Batalla del Salado and moves in through the Puerta de Jerez. At midnight there is still life in the lanes.
