Six beaches, one car, many days
From Frigiliana, every beach involves a drive down to the coast. From Nerja, the town beaches are close at hand and the Maro coves are a short trip east.

Nerja and Maro are ten minutes apart and feel like two coasts: promenade and chiringuitos here, rocks, pebbles and clear water there.

A small cove tucked between Burriana and Nerja’s centre. Greenery spills down the cliffs and gives it a secluded, almost tropical character despite its town location.
Our take: We often choose Carabeíllo for a quiet afternoon swim for two. Early in the day it can feel surprisingly private; once the limited space fills, that intimacy disappears quickly.
Nerja’s longest and most spacious beach feels more rustic than the central coves. Its scale makes it easier to find breathing room when the smaller beaches feel crowded.
Our take: This is our favourite picnic beach. Pack local cheese and olives, walk a little beyond the main access points and settle where the beach feels less organised.
East of Nerja lies the protected Maro–Cerro Gordo coast: rocks, open water, landscape. Here the sea decides the day.
Cliffs rise directly behind this pebbly beach, and the water can be noticeably clearer than in town. It is the natural starting point for snorkelling and kayak trips along the coast.
Our take: If the sea is calm, renting a kayak is the memorable choice. Paddle for the cliffs and coves rather than for a promised waterfall: the falls depend on recent rain and are not always running.
Set inside the natural park, Cantarriján combines a wild setting with a relaxed, clothing-optional atmosphere and beach restaurants known for fresh seafood.

For days when beach, lunch and old town belong together.
Nerja’s most recognisable little cove sits directly below the Balcón de Europa, framed by old fishermen’s cottages and the historic centre above.
Our take: Go before 10:00. The light on the white cottages and the calmer water make the morning feel special, before the Balcón and the cove become busy.
Official visitor information describes Burriana as a broad urban beach with a promenade, bus and parking access, plus listed beach and food services.
Our take: AYO is at Paseo Burriana 15: paella from the big pan, at midday right on the beach.
The same beach is two beaches on two days. Time of day and wind decide more than the choice of cove.
Small coves are small. In high summer they are yours in the morning and from five, everyone’s at midday.
A sunny day can have waves. Take snorkel and kayak with you and decide at the water.
The waterfalls on the cliffs run after rain, mostly in spring. In the dry summer the landscape remains; the water comes back later.
Easy access and services mean people; the quiet spots with clear water have pebbles and a path.
For Maro and the natural park: water, shade and shoes for the path.
At Maro and the wilder coves spaces are scarce; in high summer come before ten or from the late afternoon.
Pack your own snorkelling gear for Maro and the quieter coves; the town beaches have rental.
Choose Burriana for a long paella lunch, Cantarriján for fresh fish and central Nerja when tapas after the beach matters more than eating on the sand.

The beach is one part of the day; before and after, the village belongs to it.
Frigiliana remains a natural home base when the beach is a day trip. If spontaneous walk-to-beach access matters more, AMARA Playa in Nerja is 200 m from Torrecilla beach .
An early swim and then a walk above Frigiliana; the long routes in the Sierra Almijara wait for a cooler day.

At Burriana, beach and lunch lie side by side: AYO on Paseo Burriana, paella from the big pan, for decades.
If the coast day ends near the old town, you walk on to Cochran’s Terrace. We watched the sunset there in summer 2025, with a Cuba Libre and a Mai Tai.
