Nerja is compact and mostly flat — no hill village. So here it isn’t height that decides, but proximity: how far is it to the beach in the morning, to the tapas in the evening, and how quiet is the night?
A few hundred metres make the difference between “beach at the door” and “car first”, between “right in the evening buzz” and “a quiet night”. The best location is the one whose proximity suits your holiday.

Broadly there are three worlds: the lively old town by the Balcón, the beach zones, and the quieter residential hills. Each solves proximity differently — and trades something else for it.
Old Town & Balcón de Europa
The white lanes around the Balcón de Europa: restaurants, tapas bars, shops and the famous viewing balcony over the sea. All on foot, life all day — but in high summer it’s busy and lively at night.
Best for
Those who want the centre and restaurants at the door and don’t mind the bustle.
Honestly
Busy in summer and loud at night; parking is hard, and the nearest sandy beach is a short walk.

Torrecilla
At the foot of the old town: the city beach right there and just 5 minutes to the Balcón — where AMARA Playa is.
Burriana
The big, classic sandy beach with beach bars; a relaxed beach day, a bit further from the centre.

Beach lovers and families who want to be at the water first thing.
Honestly
Burriana is busy in summer; from there it’s a bit of a walk to the historic centre.
Residential hills
The urbanised hillsides like Capistrano or Punta Lara: quieter, more space, often with a pool and a view. In return, the beach, restaurants and centre are usually a drive away.
Best for
Those who value quiet, a view and space over being right by the sea.
Honestly
For the beach, shopping and dinner, a car is usually handy or necessary here.
Nerja suits guests who want beach, coastal life and comfortable infrastructure — Spanish tradition with the sea at the door. Those looking for the quiet mountain village away from the coast are better off up in Frigiliana.

In Nerja you often have to choose: beach *or* centre, proximity *or* quiet. AMARA Playa is in Torrecilla — at the foot of the old town, with the city beach right at the door and only about five minutes on foot to the Balcón de Europa and the restaurants. And quieter than the old town itself.
To stay honest: your biggest, most relaxed beach day is at Burriana; those who value quiet and space over proximity are better off in the hills. For beach and centre in one, Torrecilla is just right.

Look beyond the distance on the map. Think about slopes, steps and the walk back as well as the walk there.
Do you want to leave it parked most days, use it mainly for excursions or depend on it for everyday life?
The Old Town, Torrecilla and Carabeo can all work well without a car if the exact location gives you practical walking routes to the places you expect to use most. If both the beach and central Nerja matter to you, Torrecilla is one option worth considering.
Parts of it are. Many central streets are comfortable to walk, but beach access, cliffs, the climb back from Burriana and the residential hills mean Nerja should not be thought of as completely flat.
Stay close to the beach if going easily back and forth to the sea matters most. Stay in or near the old town if restaurants and evening life should happen almost automatically once you step outside. Torrecilla and Carabeo sit between those two priorities in different ways.
Not necessarily. If you choose a central location, you can spend much of the stay on foot. A car becomes more useful further from the centre or when you want to explore the wider region regularly.
Yes, many people walk it. Back towards the centre it climbs noticeably; after a long beach day a taxi is a good idea.
Yes. Think of them as two nearby bases with different everyday atmospheres. Choose Nerja if you want to wake up by the coast, or Frigiliana if you want to wake up in the village — and include the other in your stay.
